Institution: Niagara College, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Niagara College boasts the nation’s largest range of on-campus businesses – or “learning enterprises” – designed to provide experiential learning opportunities for students, applied research facilities, while generating revenue that is re-invested in student learning.
Niagara College operates the Niagara College Teaching Winery – Canada’s first and only commercial teaching winery, along with Canada’s first Teaching Brewery and Benchmark Restaurant – all part of Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute. Niagara College also operates the Niagara Waters Spa, a learning enterprise for students in Niagara College’s Esthetician program, and the Niagara College Greenhouse, which provides a practical learning environment for students in Niagara College’s horticulture programs. The learning enterprises also provide learning opportunities for students in marketing, business and accounting programs.

NC’s learning enterprises are a great success story, providing plenty of work opportunities and generating upwards of $2 million in revenues as well. I won’t be surprised to see other institutions try to emulate this success!
