Institution: SAIT Polytechnic, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Approximate Budget: $30000000
SAIT Polytechnic’s new 22-storey residence tower raises the bar for luxury accommodations for the 700 students living there. Floor-to-ceiling windows on every floor offer breathtaking views of the Bow River and the Rocky Mountains. The top floor includes a VIP Lounge and a VIP Suite for visiting officials.
Throughout the building, each suite features a full kitchen with granite countertops, walnut cabinets and black appliances. Flat-screen TVs are standard in the one-bedroom units. The building includes the usual amenities (lounges, games rooms, a workout room, study and meeting rooms, laundry facilities) but also a full-service Starbucks and a Sobeys grocery store in the lobby. (The first Sobeys on a college or university campus anywhere in Canada.) The building meets LEED Silver standards, with motion-sensing lighting, low-flow showers and plumbing fixtures, radiant heating in the walls and a heat recovery system. Student leases include local phone service, cable TV and internet.
"The Tower is becoming a community gathering spot and a cornerstone of our revitalized campus. I truly believe it is one of the premier residence buildings in all of North America." - Irene Lewis, President & CEO, SAIT Polytechnic
