Adjunct & Contingent Faculty

Canada’s most trusted higher ed monitor and futurist, Ken Steele, summarizes the plight of adjunct and contingent faculty in the US and Canada. Massification of class sizes has hit its reasonable limits, so the next approach to managing tight budgets has been creating an underpaid underclass of part-time adjunct professors, paid a fraction of the salary, given no job security, no benefits, not even office space. Includes excerpts from PBS Newshour’s special report (at https://youtu.be/Bz4pK8UP4PM ), excerpts from HEQCO’s report on adjunct faculty in Ontario universities (http://www.heqco.ca/en-ca/Research/ResPub/Pages/The-Other-University-Teachers-Non-Full-Time-Instructors-at-Ontario-Universities.aspx ), and mention of the “Fight for $15,” Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association statistics, the York University strike in Spring 2015, and bad news about outsourcing adjunct faculty at community colleges in Michigan. Many PhD graduates are finding they can earn four times as much working for essay mills, writing essays for cheating students. In Vermont, Robert Skiff’s Oplerno (Open Learning Organization) is pursuing a new model, in which instructors get to keep 80-90% of tuition — a much more appropriate level of income than many sessional positions offer.
