Budget / Layoff Trackers

At Eduvation, we’ve been monitoring public announcements and/or media reports of projected deficits, projected declines in revenue, and budget cuts to address those projections, at Canadian colleges and universities since Fall 2024. (We understand that these numbers are obviously different from an accounting perspective, but we are attempting to measure the total impact of IRCC’s policy changes on institutions, and summarize announcements and news coverage in a concise way.)

The graph below is updated in real time, and reflects projected deficits, revenue declines, and/or budget cuts that have been quantified publicly so far. (For detailed footnotes with clarification and source links, please see the Deficit Tracker page in our free virtual community, Eduvation Circles.)

How can institutions cope?

For years I have offered strategy workshops to boards and senior administrators on the need to adapt to times of austerity, and some innovative tactics and approaches. (See my topic, “Staying the Course despite the Headwinds.”) I have also summarized some of the tactics being announced this Fall in CdnPSE, on Eduvation Circles in “Battening Down the Hatches.”)

Job Impacts

We’ve also been monitoring public announcements or media reports of staff and faculty positions eliminated or forecast to be eliminated, whether through attrition, early retirement incentives, or layoffs. (The goal is to measure the total impact of IRCC’s 2024 policy changes on CdnPSE’s workforce. Those impacts will roll out progressively in 2025, 2026, and 2027.)

The graph below is updated in real time, and reflects jobs eliminated that have been quantified publicly so far. (For detailed footnotes with clarification and source links, please see the Layoff Tracker page on Eduvation Circles.)
